With the growing demand for fossil fuels and increased concern for the enviroment, the world has started looking for other ways to keep our love of the road alive. This is a broad look at alternative power systems used in cars, let us investigate where we are in our quest. There are four mejor catergories of cars using alternative power sources on the market today.

Hybrid Cars

The first type of car on our list is the hybrid. A hybrid car can be propelled in two different forms, by an electris motor supplied with energy produced by a gasoline engine or a gasoline engine takes over after you have depleted the charge in the batteries. It really isn’t all that new but has come along way to improve the gas mileage of vehicles. Hybrid cars are consider by most only to be a steppimg stone to the future, after all it still needs fossil fuels for power.

Biomass Cars

Biomass is the second type of alternative fuel, the main reason this is believed to be an alternative fuel is because it can be manmade, meaning it is a renewable energy source. In Reality, it is the same as fossil fuels except instead of taking a million years to make naturally, it can be made using waste products in a matter of weeks. In this category is listed ethanol, some places list it seperate but being made mainly with corn and grains it is still a biomass. Believed to be a bad side effect of ethanol fuel is the increased price of food as the food supply is decreased by whatever volume of farm land used for growing. The real problem with using these types of fuels are the carbon dioxide released during consumption, adding to the ever growing problem of golbal warming.

Hydrogen Cars

Hydrogen is a real alternative fuel for transportation. No know waste besides water but does require an infrastructure for refueling, making hydrogen the perfect system of goverments and big business, able to produce profits and taxes. Places like california already have been installing refueling station making the future happen today.

Electric Cars

Last on our list is the electric car, truly the way to go in making the open road a thing of joy again and allowing us to take those sunday drives of ages gone by. But with the technology for sustained trips still afew years away, these cars are only good for around town. Hopefully as batteries become more advance we will see electric cars replace our transportation needs with a more enviromental friendly way to take long trips.
